Commissioner Myers Votes to Approve Non-Subsidized Solar Program

Phoenix, Ariz.— At the Arizona Corporation Commission’s (“ACC”) April 9, 2024, regular open meeting, Commissioner Nick Myers joined the unanimous vote of the Commission to approve Trico Electric Cooperative’s (“Trico”) experimental community solar tariff pilot program.

“I wholeheartedly support Trico’s solar program because it allows its members the opportunity to purchase energy from renewable resources for up to 100 percent of their energy usage and it does so without imposing any additional costs to non-participating members,” said Commissioner Myers after the meeting.

Trico will set a portion of the energy from its Avion Solar and Battery Facility and its Chirreon Solar and Battery Facility to serve participants in the pilot program. There will be no upfront charges to participate. The Solar Block Energy Rate will be fixed for participants for a period of 10 years and may be transferred to other locations within Trico service area under certain circumstances. In addition to the Solar Block Energy Rate, participating customers will be responsible for paying all charges incurred under their Standard Rate Schedule multiplied by the applicable energy rate. A member may terminate participation at any time during the 10-year period but will be subject to a $100 termination fee.

“Customers who want more renewable energy but for whom rooftop solar does not work should have options, but not at the expense of other customers,” commented Commissioner Myers, “I therefore applaud Trico for thinking ‘outside the box’ and would encourage other utilities to do the same.”
