Commissioner Nick Myers Appointed to the Markets+ State Committee and the Western Resource Adequacy Program Committee of State Representatives
Phoenix, Ariz.— Commissioner Nick Myers was recently appointed to serve on the newly-formed Markets+ State Committee (MSC) and the Western Resource Adequacy Program Committee of State Representatives (WRAP-COSR). These appointments ensure Arizona interests are represented as western states continue to explore day-ahead markets and more regional planning into the future.
“With the increasing demand for power in the West and a growing integration of intermittent renewable generation, regional planning will become increasingly critical if power in the western states is to remain reliable and affordable. Arizona should be able to take advantage of selling excess power to other states as well as purchasing low-cost power from other states when it makes economic sense,” commented Commissioner Myers.
The MSC is a standing committee of Markets+, a western day-ahead market operated by the Southwest Power Pool (SPP), formed to allow state regulators to provide their perspectives on pertinent matters related to the market. According to SPP, Markets + is “a conceptual bundle of services proposed by SPP that would centralize day-ahead and real-time unit commitment and dispatch.” As a voting member of the MSC, Commissioner Myers will assist in providing direction and input to the Markets+ Independent Panel (MIP), Markets+ Executive Committee (MPEC), and any other task force on matters deemed pertinent by the MSC, including initiative prioritization, market operations, and policy issues.
WRAP-COSR is a standing committee of the Western Power Pool (WPP) Western Resource Adequacy Program (WRAP). WRAP is “the first regional reliability planning and compliance program in the history of the West . . . . It will deliver a region-wide approach for assessing and addressing resource adequacy and provide an important step forward for reliability in the region.” The purpose of the COSR is to effectively engage state and provincial representatives in WRAP efforts and to advise the WPP Board of Directors and the Federal Energy Regulatory Commission (FERC) on matters related to WRAP governance, program design, and operations.
“It’s an honor to be asked to represent Arizona on these committees,” said Commissioner Myers, “As with all my work at the Commission, reliable and affordable power for Arizonans will be my top priorities.”
