Phoenix, Ariz. – During the Arizona Corporation Commission’s December Open Meeting, Commissioner Lea Márquez Peterson cast a critical vote against the continuation of a long term subsidy for commercial electric vehicles (EV) that would have impacted residential customers of Arizona Public Service (APS). The commercial program or Take Charge AZ was proposed in the 2023 Transportation Electrification Plan. Her decision centers around the program's proposed $5 million subsidy that was to be paid by all customers, and reflects her commitment to safeguard the interests of Arizona's ratepayers.  Commissioner Márquez Peterson's vote is a testament to her commonsense approach in addressing the state's evolving energy needs. 

"I think this is a commonsense approach to electric vehicle growth in Arizona. We need to understand and continue to learn how the addition of EVs throughout our state is going to impact grid stability and planning for future energy growth," said Commissioner Márquez Peterson.  Her decision underscores the importance of ensuring that the introduction and expansion of electric vehicles (EVs) in Arizona is conducted in a manner that does not unfairly burden the ratepayers. Commissioner Márquez Peterson discussed the broader implications of electric vehicles on the state’s energy infrastructure and the necessity for a strategic and informed approach.  

While acknowledging the potential benefits of such initiatives, Commissioner Márquez Peterson’s stance is driven by the principle that investments in such programs should not compromise the financial well-being of all APS customers.
